A short story:

I've been listening to a lot of Randy Newman along with a lot of Scott Joplin. Also, I've been telling the kids silly stories while driving around in the car or right before bedtime. This is the kind of collateral damage that comes from all that stuff going into and coming out of the same mind. Enjoy!

TWINS

When the rain comes down and the puddles splash
Harriet frowns, but Angie laughs,
Pulls on her boots, her coat and hat
Harriet yells, “Mom, Angie’s goin’ out!”
And then like a bomb, the girls start to shout
Mother runs in, “What’s this all about?”
They’re swinging and pulling hair
They’re biting and kicking shins
The next door neighbors stare,
“Oh who ever saw such twins, I ask you?”

When Lorraine found out she was having twins
She shouted out, “Naw, look again.”
The doctor just gave her a nervous grin
See, there in the ultrasound, four tiny hands
Were flailing around to beat the band
Punching just as hard as those little arms can
The doc said, “In all my years,
I’ve never seen the like of this”
Lorraine said, “It’s my worst fear,
See, I have my own twin sister...”

Angie and Harriet can’t get along,
It’s all screams and spit and “I’m right, she’s wrong!”
Lorraine just says, “Girls, I’ve heard that song.”
But she doesn’t waste away, no she don’t wear thin,
She just silently prays again and again
“When they grow up Lord, give them twins.”
