about

I was driving around and saw a house with a porch swing that had just been painted candy-apple red. It was the only thing you saw as you drove past the house... then I got to thinking about what the Lord said to the Pharisees about looking great on the outside but being all death, stench and darkness on the inside and how much we probably all struggle with being the same thing in a crowd as we are in our rooms...

lyrics

BRIGHT RED PORCH SWING

The grass is cut and the flowers bloom,
The cars are washed and the roof is new
The trees are mulched and the birds all sing
But What’s behind, oh what’s behind
That bright, red porch swing?

The dishes in the sink are two years old at least
But you will never see them from the road
The floorboards, they all creak, and the shower leaks
But nobody will notice till it’s sold
Ain’t that how this goes?

The bedroom ceiling’s cracked, the mirrors are painted black
And don’t even get me started on that smell
The wires are all crossed, plus the keys have all been lost
But that won’t be my problem when it sells
And I say, “Farewell”

I’m not sure if you care, but there’s asbestos everywhere
And for years the termites have been eating good
There were cats in every room and I’ve never owned a broom
But I’d like to make a profit if I could
Don’t you think you would?

Well, it sure looks nice from the outside,
But dig a little deeper and it's all a lie
When you drive past here all you see
Is shiny and red and it swings...
