My friend Tom and I lead a Bible Study once a week in a local jail. I found out really quickly that the 'same-old-thing' will not work in the jail when it comes to worship music. You can't just sing songs about the moon and the stars and how they make you tremble at the glory of God or whatever. These guys in their jail cells can't even see the moon and the stars (and by the way, do any of us really care all that much about the moon and the stars? Really?)
No, these guys want to sing about their hearts. They want to know that Jesus loves them. They want to be able to express something that connects with the fact that they have a Great Savior who loves them no matter what. Trying to lead worship music in the jail has taught me more about writing worship music than anything else in the 12 years that I have been leading and writing songs for the people of God. In fact, I feel I'm finally getting the hang of it.
The great thing is, the stuff that works in the jail connects with everyone else as well. Turns out the church has been longing for some songs that allow them to say something real - something that actually has to do with their everyday lives. It is my sincere hope that these songs could find their way into communities of the believers all over the world... in fact, that is actually happening and I want to make it easy. So, I am producing an album of simple, clean, acoustic demos of these JAIL SONGS. I will add a new demo as often as I get a chance to record one and they will always be free. The chord charts will also be available in downloadable pdf files on my website (leeyounger.com
). If you are a worship leader or a small group leader, a church planter or pastor or just a guy or gal with a guitar or a keyboard and want to play these songs, I present them to you free of charge. Have a blast and may they build you up and communicate the Gospel they way they have done and will continue to do in Unit 2 of the Anderson County Jail.
Peace of Christ -
